Manufacturers are well aware of the many problems associated with obtaining accurate cut lengths from a torch cutter, using tachometers and contact wheels for continuous caster applications. For example, contact rollers require constant calibration, have slippage errors between the roller and the material, and need constant maintenance and calibration due to the extremely hot environment. Since 2001, the LaserSpeed® gauge has been using Laser interferometry to accurately measure the length and speed of any moving material— without touching the product. The gauge can be mounted up to 2 meters away from the hot product and provide very accurate length measurements for controlling the torch cutter. Because the gauge never contacts the hot steel, errors and maintenance issues associated with mechanical tachometers and contact wheels are eliminated. The LaserSpeed gauge is easy-to-install, simple-to-use, and provides fast, accurate measurements. The LaserSpeed has two fully-programmable quadrature pulse outputs that can be used to directly replace any encoder or tachometer. The LaserSpeed gauge can be used to provide accurate cutting control for any type of material: Hot billets, blooms and slabs before torch cutter for controlling the cut or after the torch cutter for length verification. The LaserSpeed has an accuracy of ±0.05% with a repeatability of ±0.02%. It has no moving parts to wear out and never needs calibration.
