Beta LaserMike Installs Non-Contact Measurement System Solution at New High-Tech Plastics Innovation Center in Germany

A. Schulman Academy benefits from highly accurate and complete on-line measurement system on advanced plastic pipe and tube extrusion line

Dayton, Ohio – August 3, 2012 – Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, implements the latest non-contact measurement system for plastic pipe and tube extrusion at the new A. Schulman Academy in Kerpen, Germany (near Cologne) – an innovation center dedicated to the research and innovation of plastics engineering and application technology.

“Our integrated measurement technology automates the setup and collection of production data at the center’s state-of-the-art extrusion facility,” says Marcel Kloubert, Regional Sales Manager for Beta LaserMike in Germany and Switzerland. “It also provides feedback for complete process control. This enables the A. Schulman Academy to realize a number of productivity, quality, and cost saving benefits to help plastics manufacturers develop better products and deliver more value to customers and the industry.”

The Beta LaserMike system is installed on the center’s three-layer co-extrusion line and consists of the following equipment:

  • UltraScan 1025 wall thickness gauge
  • AccuScan 5025 diameter gauge
  • DataPro 5000 process controller and data management system

The UltraScan gauge is used at the extruder trough and uses multiple transducers to continuously monitor tube wall thickness and concentricity with ±0.001 mm (±0.000040 in) measurement accuracy. It includes Beta LaserMike’s patented “Snap Technology” to automatically set up the waveforms of all transducers, track tolerances to catch wall variations, and provide higher accuracy of average wall and concentricity measurements with assured repeatability. The AccuScan gauge is placed between the puller and trough on the extrusion line to measure tube ovality and outer diameters to 25 mm (1.0 in) with ±0.001 mm (±0.000040) accuracy. The DataPro 5000 interfaces with the Beta LaserMike gauges, extrusion line, and alarm lights via Ethernet for complete control and management of the extrusion process.
