Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, today announced the growing adoption of its UltraScan measurement system by medical tube manufacturers. The UltraScan system is enabling manufacturers of small specialty tubing to achieve the highest possible measurement accuracy and product quality, while reducing start-up time and material give-away.

“Today’s medical tubing manufacturers are producing products with diameters down to the thousands of an inch with walls thinner than human hair for critical applications such as catheters, drug delivery, surgical tubing, and other medical devices,” said Bob Stockholm, Director of Sales, Americas. “And, these micro tubes are significantly more expensive to produce than the standard higher volume tubes. As such, measurement accuracy and quality is of paramount importance. Beta LaserMike’s UltraScan system consists of multiple transducers that convert electrical energy into an ultrasonic pulse that is projected at the product. Echoes are sent back to the transducers from the inner and outer walls of the tube. The transducers then convert this energy and measure the time between the pulses to determine the wall thickness. As tube walls become thinner, the echo responses get closer and overlap and become harder to read. The UltraScan system solves this problem with its unique DSP module, equipped with patented “Snap Technology.” This technology automatically sets up the waveforms of all transducers, tracks tolerances to catch wall variations, and provides higher accuracy of average wall and concentricity measurements with assured repeatability.
